In The Beginning

John Garlich and Ulla Merz discovered Palisade on one of their backpacking trips driving to Moab in the spring of 1994. Palisade is a picturesque, quaint farming town and back in 1994 peaches were the dominant crop.  In 1995 they found the perfect patch of land to plant grapes on, thus starting Bookcliff Vineyards. Those first 10 acres, filled with Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, were worked from the ground up, and to this day produce grapes that form the core of our wine portfolio.

After many years of work, John and Ulla passed along the business to the next generation of wine enthusiasts. Three families joined forces to take the reigns and bring Bookcliff Vineyards forward into the future.  The wines are crafted by an experienced winemaking team, trained in Walla Walla, Washington, bringing out the best from the grapes of Colorado.

The Vineyard

Bookcliff Farms manages 37 acres planted with 14 different varieties including Graciano (Spanish red) and Souzao (Portugese red), in addition to grapes you generally find in Bordeaux,France, the Rhone region of France and Germany.

The farms are committed to using sustainable farming practices. This means no use of any pesticide and as little use of herbicides as possible. We use compost to fertilize the soil instead of chemical fertilizer and we grow grass between the rows which keep the good and bad bugs in balance.

Colorado grapes express the character where they are grown – high altitude desert at 4,600 feet – and we are proud of making wine that captures this unique terroir in the glass.

Our Wines

Making wine is an art and a science. For us the art is the attraction and the opportunity to craft something new each season given the variables of the growing season as well as adjustments in the fermentation or aging techniques. The goal is to make a wine that is true to its varietal character and approachable now, but also cellars well for later enjoyment. And of course, 100% Colorado Grown. People talk about our wines as being in-between “Old World” and “New World”. View some of the awards our wines have won.

It is important to us to grow our own grapes so we can control the quality from source to finished product. We are also proud that all our wines are made from 100% Colorado grown grapes.

In The Winery

The basics of winemaking in small batches as we practice has stayed the same over centuries. Even today making small batches of wine is still done mostly by hand. It is motivating to us that every year we get another chance of crafting a great wine unique to the particular vintage. We also don’t hesitate to experiment with different varieties to discover the new flavors they offer. The goal is to let the varietal character of each grape shine as well as nurture select barrels to what we consider our reserve wines. Our red wines in particular are made to age well in the cellar for several years. We also enjoy our collaboration with local chefs creating our red and white blends as we appreciate their input into making wines that pair well with food. Visit us at the winery in the fall around harvest to see what it takes to turn grapes into wines that you will love.
